Hello from the Backcountry!

The Diamond D Ranch is a family-owned Guest and Hunting ranch located in the beautiful backcountry of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, 30 miles north of Stanley, Idaho.  This unique location is accessible in the Summer and early Fall months via vehicle (suv or truck preferred due to the rough 20 miles of Forest Service road) or backcountry airplane.

During the Summer and Fall months, guests enjoy horseback riding, hiking, fishing, live music, great home-cooked meals and a relaxed, vacation environment away from their everyday lives.  Weddings and reunions are also a common venue available for clients seeking rustic views and mountain air.  In the Fall months, hunters have a great guided opportunity at trophy game and once-in-a-lifetime experiences in country rarely seen by the public.  In the Winter, the Ranch is usually manned by one to two individuals, with all but one building winterized and no access in or out except for a backcountry plane with skis or a reliable snowmachine as the road is snowed-closed usually by mid-November through the end of May.

Dana (Ranch co-owner) and I have arranged the opportunity to take-on the winter caretaking responsiblities for the Ranch this round, where we have been "in the mountains" since October and will remain until May when the road opens again!  It has just been us since November 15th, 2012.  Since then, we have had a great time enjoying the mountain solitude as well as getting "our chores" done on a daily basis.  We decided that caretaking would be an awesome experience and through this blog, we hope to share this experience with others as we explore a winter wilderness few will ever see, but hope all enjoy.
